 CITICORP AWARDS CONTRACT TO MCI
AS PRIMARY U.S. DOMESTIC LONG DISTANCE VOICE CARRIER
NEW YORK, May 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Citicorp (NYSE: CCI) said today it has signed a contract making MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: MCIC) the primary carrier for the banking company's U.S. domestic long distance voice services. The contract is part of Citicorp's corporate-wide program to reduce operating expenses and enhance customer service.
Howard Brooks, senior telecommunications officer and head of the Citicorp Global Information Network, said: "This agreement is an important step in implementing Citicorp's network strategy, which calls for worldwide integration of high-quality network services."
He estimated that under the contract Citicorp will save more than $50 million in U.S. voice-service expenditures during the contract's four-year duration. The contract has an estimated total value of $250 million over the four years.
"We awarded the contract after a careful review of proposals based on uniform standards from potential providers who met our requirements on both quality of service and price," Brooks said.
As previously announced, Citicorp is consolidating its telecommunications networks worldwide by integrating voice, data and video services, simplifying purchasing agreements and improving operating efficiency within its systems. Eventually some 100 separate networks covering 92 countries will be integrated into one global system.
One goal of the consolidation program is to reach $150 million in annual savings for the corporation by the end of 1994. Another goal is to establish an integrated system to support Citicorp's global expansion by enhancing the introduction and delivery of uniform, top-quality products and services to customers in the 92 countries.
The consolidation program is part of Citicorp's two-year plan to restore its normal earnings capacity and significantly improve its balance sheet.
