CIRCUIT CITY STORES, INC., REPORTS MAY AND FIRST QUARTER SALES

 RICHMOND, Va., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Circuit City Stores, Inc. (NYSE: CC), today reported May 1993 sales of $288.7 million, which represents a 24 percent increase from May 1992 sales of $232.0 million and a 9 percent increase in comparable store sales.
 Sales for the first quarter ended May 31, 1993, were $798.5 million, a 24 percent increase from $644.3 million in the first quarter of last year. Comparable store sales increased 9 percent.
 "Our total and comparable store sales growth reflect the consumer's continued acceptance of Circuit City's retail offer in a highly competitive climate," said Richard L. Sharp, Circuit City's president and chief executive officer. "The 36 Superstores opened in the past year have made a strong contribution to total sales growth."
 During the quarter, Circuit City opened six Superstores as part of its initial entry into the Boston market. The company plans to open a total of 13 stores in the market this year, with additional openings planned for fiscal 1995.
 Circuit City Stores, Inc., is the nation's largest specialty retailer of brand-name consumer electronics and major appliances. With headquarters in Richmond, it operates 220 Superstores, seven Circuit City stores and 39 smaller, mall-based stores in the eastern, midwestern and western United States.
