CIRCUIT CITY STORES, INC. REPORTS FEBRUARY AND FISCAL YEAR SALES

RICHMOND, Va., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Circuit City Stores, Inc. (NYSE: CC), today announced February sales of $240.5 million, which represents a 17 percent increase from February 1992 sales of $205.2 million and includes a 4 percent increase in comparable store sales.
The company also announced sales for the fiscal year ended Feb. 28, 1993. Total sales for the fiscal year were $3.27 billion, a 17 percent increase from $2.79 billion in fiscal 1992. Comparable store sales increased 7 percent for the year and 9 percent for the fourth quarter ended Feb. 28, 1993.
"February's comparable store sales increase continued the quarter's strong sales trend," said Richard L. Sharp, Circuit City's president and chief executive officer. "February's results reflect the loss of the Leap Year Saturday that added a day to February 1992 sales.
"Comparable store sales growth and continued geographic expansion of Circuit City's Superstore base produced the strong total sales increase for fiscal year 1993," Sharp said. The company plans to release fiscal 1993 earnings in early April.
"We will continue our growth in fiscal 1994 with the opening of approximately 40 Superstores," Sharp said. "The majority of these stores will be in two new markets, Boston and Chicago." Circuit City opened its first Boston store in February. The company expects to open another eight stores late in the first quarter of fiscal 1994. Additional openings are planned for later in the year.
Circuit City Stores, Inc., is the nation's largest specialty retailer of brand-name consumer electronics and major appliances. With headquarters in Richmond, it operates 214 Superstores, seven Circuit City stores and 39 Impulse stores in the eastern, midwestern and western United States.
