CINEPLEX ODEON INTRODUCES DIGITAL THEATRE SOUND FOR "JURASSIC PARK"
TORONTO, May 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Cineplex Odeon Corporation (NYSE: CPX) announced today that it will provide the latest in digital sound technology by installing Digital Theatre Systems (DTS) into more than 125 of its key auditoriums across North America. This introduction will coincide with the much anticipated release of Universal Pictures' and Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment's `JURASSIC PARK' on June 11, 1993. "`JURASSIC PARK' is the perfect launch vehicle for a new enhanced sound system," says Allen Karp, president and chief executive officer of Cineplex Odeon Corporation. "`JURASSIC PARK' combines state-of-the-art visuals with an amazing array of special sound effects. The Digital Theatre System is going to throw sound out into the audience in a way it's never been heard before. We are planning a totally overwhelming audio-visual experience for our viewers, which is going to secure JURASSIC PARK's place as one of the hottest motion pictures of the summer -- if not of the decade." Digital Theatre Systems brings a new dimension to cinema sound. DTS differs from other digital systems in that its digital sound-track is not contained on the film itself, but on a separate CD-ROM disk. Using a digital time code printed on the motion picture film to control the operation of a separate CD player wired into the theatre's existing speakers, up to six tracks of high quality digital sound can be precisely queued to the action of the film. "When people decide to see `JURASSIC PARK' this summer," says Karp, "we want them to feel they must see it at a Cineplex Odeon theatre to get the full impact. Our enhanced presentation is going to drive home the point that Cineplex Odeon theatres make dinosaurs, cinema sound and the whole movie experience both dramatic and larger than life. Our patrons will not only see a world they've never experienced before, but hear it as well." Cineplex Odeon has been known for providing state-of-the-art audio- visual technology in its theatres, as well as being at the forefront of the enhanced moviegoing experience. DTS will add another innovation to the corporation's existing stable of enhanced sound systems, like Dolby(R) stereo with surround and Dolby(R) Spectral Recording (SR) with surround. Cineplex Odeon is one of North America's largest theatre circuits with 1,614 screens in 363 locations, primarily in major markets. The corporation's shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol CPX. -0- 5/24/93 /CONTACT: Howard Lichtman, executive vice president, marketing & communications, Cineplex Odeon Corporation, Toronto, Ontario, 416-323-6634/ (CPX)
