CINEPLEX ODEON DEMONSTRATES LEADERSHIP ROLE IN HANDICAPPED ISSUES
NEW YORK, July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Over half a million businesses in the U.S. are working to comply with the employment provision of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, which goes into effect on Sunday, July 26. The law, seeking to ban job discrimination against disabled people, is expected to help 14 million working-age Americans with physical or mental impairments.
For the film exhibition industry, the law has meant making theaters accessible to wheelchairs and providing special devices for the hearing- impaired. A portion of the law, enacted earlier this year, states that theaters must have full access for the movie-going public. Cineplex Odeon, (NYSE: CPX), North America's second largest film exhibitor, anticipated the upcoming disability regulations as early as November 1985 and began to install elevators, ramps and lifts in new and renovated buildings.
Howard Lichtman, executive vice president of marketing and communications at Cineplex Odeon, notes, "We knew that this would likely be a requirement sometime in the future and why put off the expense? We felt we should do it right the first time. Sixty-five percent of our theaters are already fully accessible, and one third are equipped for the hearing-impaired (with additional theaters partially accessible). We believe this is well ahead of the industry standard." Cineplex was the first theater circuit to display the disability symbols in newspaper advertising.
"Cineplex Odeon Fresh Meadows is my favorite theater because they have integrated seating. I can bring a friend who can sit next to me, and we have a choice of sitting in the front, middle or back," says Chris Rosa, a Queens, N.Y., resident who uses a wheelchair. Rosa, a disabilities activist, notes that many theaters that provide wheelchair access neglect to provide companion seating and limit the seating to one area: the back of the theater.
Rosa was recently filmed at Cineplex Odeon's Fresh Meadows theater by ABC-TV's "Good Morning America," showing viewers how he enjoys using the theater.
With headquarters in Toronto, Cineplex Odeon is the second largest film exhibitor in North America, and the largest in Canada, based on its total of 1,656 screens in 384 locations.
