CIBA-GEIGY TURNS CRITICS INTO ADVISORS, SAYS ZIEGLER
ARDSLEY, N.Y., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Critics as advisors? After

five years of quarterly meetings with members of religious, environmental and consumer-related public interest groups, a handful of pharmaceutical companies are finally reaping some benefits, according to Dr. Charles E. Ziegler of the Ciba-Geigy Corp.
Noted critic and author Dr. Milton Silverman from the University of California, underscored the changing relationship to Ziegler and a handful of other pharmaceutical industry executives when he told them, "I can tell you that by and large, you guys are the good guys in the developing countries. Now the local (Third World) companies are the bad guys."
"What brought about the change in attitude," said Ziegler -- who had joined with Sister Regia Rowan of the Committee for Responsible Investment's Medical Mission Sisters in assembling the group five years ago -- "was that both sides learned to talk to and not at each other." The executives learned what concerns were real, what changes would be necessary to resolve them, and what concerns were due to a lack of adequate information.
"For any change to be truly meaningful," explained sister Rowan, "it must occur from the inside out. Ciba-Geigy, for example, has made a tremendous about face. They never use to face their critics. Now they say, 'Come and see what we're doing.'"
