CIBA-GEIGY REPORTS 1992 MIDYEAR SALES RESULTS

CIBA-GEIGY REPORTS 1992 MIDYEAR SALES RESULTS
 ARDSLEY, N.Y., Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ciba-Geigy Limited of Basel,

Switzerland, today announced its results for the first half of 1992.
Worldwide sales for the first six months were SFr 12,258 million compared with SFr 10,951 million for the comparable 1991 time period -- an increase of 12 percent. Profit after tax was SFr 1,424 million -- an increase of 12 percent over SFr 1,269 million for the same period in 1991. Cash flow increased 11 percent from SFr 1,825 million during the first half of 1991 to SFr 2,032 million for the first half of 1992.
Sales, which grew by eight percent in local currencies (12 percent growth in Swiss Francs) were influenced by the weak Swiss franc during most of the first half of 1992. The average rates for one U.S. dollar were SFr 1.47 during the first half of 1992 and SFr 1.39 during the corresponding period of 1991.
Ciba-Geigy's worldwide interests are divided into three business sectors -- Healthcare, Agriculture and Industry. The sales results for each sector are as follows.
 CIBA-GEIGY LIMITED
 Worldwide Sales
 (In millions of Swiss francs)
1992 1991 Percent change from first half 1991
First six months Actual Currency Adjusted(A)
 Healthcare 4,340 3,571 22 18
 Agriculture 3,299 3,184 4 1
 Industry 4,619 4,196 10 5
 Group 12,258 10,951 12 8
 (A) -- At corresponding 1991 exchange rates for the first six months of that year (excluding high-inflation countries).
Ciba-Geigy's Healthcare sector enjoyed strong growth during the first half of 1992. Sales grew by 18 percent on a currency-adjusted basis (22 percent in Swiss francs). Pharma, the predominant division, achieved a turnover of SFr 3,244 million and has moved up from fifth to fourth position in the worldwide ranking of pharmaceutical companies. Instrumental to this performance was the extremely successful launch of the Nicotinell TTS/Habitrol in the United States.
The Agriculture sector completed the first six months with sales equivalent to those of the corresponding 1991 period (on a currency- adjusted basis) -- a four percent improvement in Swiss francs. While the Animal Health and Seed divisions continued their rapid development, the performance of the Plant Protection division, by far the largest division of the sector, remained slightly below that of the first half of 1991. A spring drought in many parts of Europe and changing buying patterns due to the new European Community Agricultural Policy made their impact felt.
The Industry Sector achieved a five percent growth in local currencies over
the corresponding 1991 period. In Swiss francs this growth totaled 10 percent. Almost all of the seven divisions show strong sales in the United States with double-digit growth rates. In addition, Southeast Asian markets remained strong while recessive trends were still evident in Europe and Japan.
In the United States, Ciba-Geigy Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Ciba-Geigy Limited, had mid-year sales results of $2.6 billion. This represents an increase of 15 percent form the comparable period last year. The U.S. sales results are:
 U.S Sales
