CIBA-GEIGY MOVING AMERICAN SCIENCE STUDENTS TO THE HEAD OF THE CLASS
ARDSLEY, N.Y., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sound education is good business for now and for the future. That is why CIBA-GEIGY Corporation is investing in science education all across the United States.
A centerpiece of these efforts is the statewide Alabama School for Math and Science (ASMS) at Mobile. There, students are immersed in such subjects as advanced physics, calculus and astronomy. ASMS is funded through a collaboration of state government, industry, and private individuals. More than 80 percent of the faculty hold Ph.Ds and hail from this country's best academic and research institutions.
CIBA-GEIGY Corporation is one of the several corporations that fund the school. John Mincy, CIBA-GEIGY vice president, McIntosh site, is chairman of the ASMS board and oversees the school's math, science, and liberal arts curriculum. "ASMS will give Alabama's public school students the opportunity to shape our technological future," said Mincy.
Other examples of CIBA-GEIGY's education investment include:
-- A Gwinnett County, Ga., teacher is spending six weeks this summer on an island off the coast of Georgia studying sea turtles in their natural habitat. CIBA Vision Corporation has sponsored her on this environmental expedition. She will learn how fragile life is for some species. When she returns to the classroom, she will be able to teach her students about their role in protecting wildlife.
-- In Anaheim, Calif., and Bellingham, Wash., managers and scientists from the Company's Composites Division serve as visiting professors at Cal State at Fullerton, Western Washington State University, and other colleges and secondary schools in their areas. Their presentations focus on how design and manufacturing processes are being revolutionized as traditional metals are replaced by lightweight, high strength composite materials in the aerospace and automotive industries. Their instruction has helped recruit top students into careers on composites.
-- At The Agricultural Group in Greensboro, N.C., CIBA-GEIGY employees have become mentors in the schools to students who are at risk of dropping out. The employees spend time with the students working on homework assignments, counseling students on issues, and supporting them as friends.
-- At CIBA-GEIGY's U.S. headquarters in Ardsley, N.Y., teachers from the New York region spend two weeks each summer in the research laboratories gaining a better understanding of the role of science in industry so they can better prepare their students for careers in the sciences. The achievements of young science students are honored each year with the High School Science Awards Program.
"These and many other education programs are key components of our efforts to integrate our economic, social and environmental responsibilities," said Richard Barth, CIBA-GEIGY chairman and president. "Today's students are tomorrow's employees. They will continue to solve complex problems. It is up to us, an industry leader, to take steps today to prepare them for tomorrow's challenges."
CIBA-GEIGY Corporation is a leading developer and manufacturer of healthcare, agricultural and industrial products, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of CIBA-GEIGY Limited of Basel, Switzerland.
