CIBA PHARMACEUTICALS ISSUES STATEMENT ON RITALIN SHORTAGE

SUMMIT, N.J., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pharmaceuticals Division of Ciba-Geigy Corporation issued the following announcement today:
Pharmacies across the country will soon be experiencing shortages of Ritalin(R) (methylphenidate hydrochloride USP).
Ritalin is a mild central nervous system stimulant used in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and for the treatment of narcolepsy.
Methylphenidate is classified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) as a Schedule II drug -- subjecting it to annual production quotas for all manufacturers.
Historically, all supplies of methylphenidate have diminished toward the end of the year as the production quotas are exhausted by the various manufacturers. This year, the situation has become more acute due to a delay in the DEA's consideration of whether to increase the 1993 quota.
Ciba Pharmaceuticals has mailed over 400,000 letters to physicians, pharmacies and pharmacy directors at medical care facilities advising them of the impending shortage. All recipients were advised to check with several pharmacies for supply and if necessary for the prescribing physician to consider alternate therapies for their patients.
Ciba Pharmaceuticals is working closely with the DEA to address this problem, and will commence round-the-clock production upon a final decision from the DEA to increase the allowable quota. Once a decision is reached, it's anticipated that additional supplies will be available in pharmacies in early December.
