CIBA COMPOSITES RESTRUCTURES BUSINESS UNITS

ANAHEIM, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Ciba Composites today announced it has begun to restructure its worldwide business units. Ciba Composites is a division of Ciba-Geigy Limited of Basel, Switzerland. The division's worldwide headquarters is in Anaheim, Calif. The division manufactures strong and lightweight products used in aerospace and other industries.
While the division maintained a positive net cash flow bottomline in 1992, the change is necessary because of slow worldwide economies and declines in the worldwide aircraft industry. The restructuring enables the division to maximize use of existing worldwide modern assets, consolidate leadership, and focus on the needs of its customers. The restructuring will also lead to job reductions worldwide.
Ciba Composites business has formed three business segments, one Materials U.S. and one Materials Europe (EuroMaterials), both of which manufacture fabrics, prepregs (resin pre-impregnated fabrics and fibers), film adhesives, honeycomb core, and sandwich panels. The third business segment, Structures and Interiors, manufactures interiors and structures for aircraft and industrial markets. The Structures and Interiors business segment is under one management team. To accelerate the formation of EuroMaterials, three prepreg/materials units are being consolidated into one business.
With this restructuring, leadership will be strengthened. There will be a more aggressive use of the most modern prepreg manufacturing facilities with a focus on increasing the effective use of current facilities rather than the acquisition of facilities and product lines. In addition, greater emphasis on the customer will accelerate improvements in process technology.
Research efforts will focus on processes and technologies to enable Ciba Composites and its customers to further reduce costs for composite structures. Research into new technologies will continue within the company and also together with key customers. Current customer partnerships are evaluating ways to further reduce the cost per part of finished structures. Activities in certain significant industrial projects using Ciba Composites' materials are under consideration.
"All of our operations will continue to focus on total quality and customer needs," said Dr. Juergen Habermeier, president - Composites Division. "The division is committed to meeting the current and future needs of its customers."
Ciba is a leading developer and manufacturer of healthcare, agricultural and industrial products. The company is committed to its integrated vision of social, economic and environmental responsibilities.
