CHS takes third place at 56th Annual CIT.

CHESTER The Chester YellowJacket boys won third place at the 56th Annual Chester Invitational Tournament

The CHS Cheerleaders were the winners of the 2018 Cheerleading Competition; and two YellowJacket players, Ian Reith and Keith Kiner, were selected to the 2018 CIT All-Tournament Team.

This years tournament the longest running tournament south of I-64 featured eight teams including five Illinois teams Chester, New Athens, Marissa-Coulterville Valmeyer, Cobden, and three Missouri teams, including Perryville Public, Saxony Lutheran, Perryville and Valle Catholic.

In addition to the basketball games, the eight cheerleading teams that accompanied the teams vied in the 2018 Cheerleading Competition.

First Round games took place on Jan. 8 and 9. Upper-bracket games were played Jan. 8 and featured Saxony Lutheran and New Athens, whille Perryville faced Valmeyer.

Game 1: Saxony dominated the competition from the onset, leading 18-8 after one quarter and 37-17 at halftime. The Crusaders outscored the Yellowjackets 14-2 in the third quarter to lead 51-19, and down the stretch Saxony outscored New Athens 12-3 to win the game, 63-22.

Saxony was led by Paiton Miller (18), Jalen Williams (11) and Trae Robinson (10). New Athens was led by Landon Deutschman (11), Jaxon Heintz (6) and George Schneider (3). With the win Saxony advanced to the Semifinals. The loss moved Valmeyer to the Consolation side of the bracket.

Game 2: Valmeyer led 14-11 after the first period. At halftime, Valmeyer led, 25-19. In the third quarter Perryville outscored Valmeyer, 14-13, but still trailed the Valmeyer Pirates, 38-33. A 19-10 Valmeyer effort secured the win for the Pirates as Valmeyer beat Perryville, 57-43.

Valmeyer was paced by Owen Miller (15), Philip Reinhardt (13) and Michael Chism (12). Perryville was led by Chase Brown (10). The win advanced Valmeyer to the Semifinal Round. The loss moved Perryville to the Consolation Championship Bracket.

Round 1 games on Jan. 9 and included Chester vs. Marissa-Coulterville and Cobden vs. Valle Catholic.

Game 3: Chester dominated action throughout the contest leading, 22-6 after one quarter of play. At the half the Yellowjackets led, 43-19. After the break the Jackets outscored the Meteors, 20-8 to extend their lead to, 63-27. To close the game, Marissa-Coulterville outscored Chester, 9-8, but it was too-little-too-late as Chester won the game, 71-36.

The Yellowjackets were led by Ian Reith (14), Keith Kiner (12), and Colin Wingerter (11). Marissa-Coulterville was led by Cameron Bowlby (14), Maison McHughes (7), and Blake Steinwagner (6). The win advanced Chester to the Semifinal Round while the loss moved Marissa-Coulterville to Consolation Championship Bracket.

Game 4: In the Cobden-Valle Catholic matchup, Valle led 12-8 after the first quarter and by eight points, 27-19 at the half. Cobden outscored Valle in the third quarter, 12-6 but still trailed by two points, 33-31. The fourth quarter was a knock-down-drag-out battle. Cobden managed to edge out Valle down the stretch with an 18-14 performance and win the game, by two points, 49-47.

Cobden was led by Noah Franklin (16), John Russel (14) and Zane Nance (6). Valle was led by Carter Hoog (11), Mason Skaggs (9), and Kyle Gielow (9).
