CHRYSLER RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT CLINTON'S ECONOMIC PACKAGE

DETROIT, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Robert J. Eaton, chairman and chief executive officer of Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C), in response to the economic package presented by President Clinton:
"It's a tough package. But one look at the deficit that is strangling this country and you know that toughness is what's needed.
"As we did during the campaign, we applaud the President's stated commitment to make job creation an integral part of our economic recovery. To do that, the Administration will have to come to grips with our growing trade problem. The way the U.S. Department of Commerce measures it, our trade deficit with Japan alone has cost America 800,000 jobs.
"Chrysler knows what equality of sacrifice can accomplish. It saved our company and tens of thousands of jobs in the early 1980s. We are willing to do our share, to join others in making sacrifices, and look forward to working with the Administration and Congress as they tackle the tough decisions that lie ahead -- especially healthcare reform, which can do a great deal to bolster America's competitive position."
