CHRYSLER REPORTS BEST MARCH SALES SINCE 1988; BEST QUARTER SINCE 1989; BEST TRUCK MONTH EVER

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation's (NYSE: C) total vehicle sales of 187,982 for March were 25 percent above March 1992, and marked the best March performance in five years. Total market share rose to an estimated 15.3 percent, compared to 12.9 percent in March 1992.
Total vehicle sales for the first quarter of 474,372 represented the best first-quarter results since 1989, when the company sold 486,605 vehicles.
Truck sales for the month were the highest for any month in the corporation's history, with 109,482 units -- an 18-percent increase from March of 1992, and 4,314 units above the previous record month, which was January 1990. It was also the 20th consecutive month of increased truck sales, compared year to year. Truck sales also set the fourth consecutive record quarter, with 275,482 units sold, vs. 248,725 in the first quarter of 1988. Previous quarterly records were set in the second, third and fourth quarters of 1992, as compared to the same periods in earlier years.
Car sales of 78,500 units represented a 36-percent increase over March 1992, giving Chrysler its fifth consecutive monthly increase, on a year-to-year basis. Both individually and collectively, Chrysler's newest sedans posted their highest sales month yet. Eagle Vision (2,388), Dodge Intrepid (6,888) and Chrysler Concorde (5,507) combined for total sales of 14,783.
"We're elated with the strong first-quarter performance, especially as it pertains to the continued rise in retail sales, which were up 27 percent in March," said Theodor R. Cunningham, executive vice president -- Sales and Marketing. March was the 16th consecutive month of retail sales increases, year to year.
"Our truck sales in March were, in a word, amazing. We thought we'd seen it all in January 1990 when we offered the first national sale on Chrysler minivans," Cunningham said, "but the winning combination of minivans, Jeep vehicles and Dodge Dakota really put us over the top. And sales of Eagle Vision, Dodge Intrepid and Chrysler Concorde are tracking beautifully as we work to build dealer inventory."
Jeep-Eagle Division set a best month ever record on sales of 38,144 units, vs. December 1992 with 33,464. It was also the division's best quarter ever, and second consecutive record quarter, with unit sales of 98,229 surpassing 1989's first-quarter sales of 75,646. Jeep also posted a best month ever record with sales of 31,265 units, topping December 1992 (27,829).
Dodge Dakota established its best sales month ever with 14,264 units, an increase of 24 percent over March 1992, and the 17th consecutive monthly record.
