 CHRYSLER PRODUCES 3-MILLIONTH AIR-BAG-EQUIPPED VEHICLE,
REPORTS FIRST CUSTOMER DUAL AIR-BAG DEPLOYMENT
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) today reported that it produced its 3-millionth air-bag- equipped vehicle and has learned from its Florida-based engineering team of its first customer dual air-bag deployment.
The landmark 3-millionth air-bag vehicle, a 1993 Dodge Intrepid ES built at the Bramalea (Ontario) Assembly Plant, is equipped with standard driver and passenger air bags and is destined for Security Dodge in Amityville, N.Y.
Other safety features on the milestone Intrepid include anti-lock brakes, traction control and standard height adjustable seat belt shoulder harnesses.
"The 3-millionth air bag does make this Dodge Intrepid a significant vehicle for Chrysler and the industry," said Ronald S. Zarowitz, Chrysler Car and Truck Safety manager. "The Intrepid, like its siblings Chrysler Concorde and Eagle Vision, offers the most comprehensive safety system ever in a Chrysler vehicle.
"And," said Zarowitz, "this November, when we add the integrated child seat as an option on Concorde, Intrepid and Vision, we'll have a safety package that is unique in the world."
As the noteworthy Intrepid was coming off the Bramalea assembly line, Chrysler engineers monitoring customer feedback from the first rental fleet of the new sedans reported the first known accident in which the vehicle's standard driver and passenger air bags deployed.
A father, mother and their two teenage children from Ireland, vacationing in Central Florida, were involved in an accident while in their rented 1993 Eagle Vision. All four occupants in the Vision were wearing their seat belts and both driver and passenger air bags deployed. All walked away from the accident unharmed.
"People walking away unharmed from an accident is obviously the intent of the extensive safety system in our new sedans," said Zarowitz. "In fact, the new sedans were crash tested almost 100 times during development to ensure the integrity of our system, so we're gratified but not surprised with the proper deployment.
"However," he added, "make no mistake about it, air bags are a supplemental safety restraint. Seat belts are still the first line of defense in an accident and when combined with air bags represent the best occupant protection in the world."
Chrysler produced its 2-millionth air-bag-equipped vehicle in October 1991. That vehicle, a 1992 Dodge Caravan, also included optional anti-lock brakes, all-wheel drive and integrated child seats.
In 1988 Chrysler began to introduce standard driver's side air bags and, in January 1991, Chrysler introduced minivan driver air bags in its Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town and Country models.
One year later, Chrysler established another industry first when it introduced the new Jeep Grand Cherokee, still the only sport utility vehicle with a driver air bag. The Grand Cherokee air bag, like all Chrysler driver or dual air-bag systems, is standard equipment.
