CHRYSLER POSTS BEST MAY IN FIVE YEARS

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler (NYSE: C) sold 204,473 cars and trucks last month, making it the best May performance in five years. The 29 percent boost over last year marked Chrysler's 16th consecutive monthly sales increase, and lifted total vehicle estimated market share 2.1 points to 15.6 percent.
Car sales totaled 83,625, highest since October 1990, and a 43 percent increase from May 1992. Estimated car market share jumped 2.7 points from a year ago to 10.7 percent. For the third consecutive month, truck sales smashed the "best ever" mark. Total sales of 120,848 surpassed last month's record by 5,039 units, and marked the 22nd consecutive monthly increase, compared year to year. The new record represents a 22 percent hike over May 1992. Estimated truck market share rose two tenths from May 1992 to 22.9 percent.
"This is the first time in our history that we sold more than 100,000 retail truck sales in a single month," said Theodor R. Cunningham, Executive Vice President -- Sales and Marketing. "And our total vehicle retail sales were up 34 percent against last year -- the highest May in five years and the highest retail volume since March 1988.
"While we're especially pleased that Chrysler can register this kind of performance despite most economic indicators signaling a slowdown, I have to admit some concern that auto industry sales still remain generally lower than we'd expect at this point in an economic recovery," Cunningham said. "We're fortunate to have outstanding new products in the marketplace at a time when pent-up demand is peaking. That winning combination is helping us recover from the past several years, which were far worse than any normal recession."
May car sales were boosted by Chrysler's newest nameplates, Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision and Chrysler Concorde, New Yorker and LHS, which combined for record sales of 17,372 units. And Dodge Shadow and Dodge Spirit established new records for May with sales of 9,940 and 9,609 units, respectively.
Chrysler Town & Country, Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan minivans combined to set a new all-time record for May, and second best month ever, on sales of 53,865. Separately, Chrysler Town & Country has already set a model year record, surpassing the 1992 model year total of 13,812 by 2,943 units.
Jeep vehicles set the third consecutive best month ever on sales of 37,667. Jeep Grand Cherokee set a new monthly record with sales of 17,188; and Jeep Wrangler managed its own "best month ever" record with sales of 7,858 -- versus April's record of 6,319. Jeep-Eagle Division set a new all-time monthly record, with total sales of 45,044.
The mid-size Dodge Dakota pickup, on sales of 13,328, enjoyed the best May ever and the 19th consecutive monthly record compared year to year.
