CHRYSLER MARKS SALE OF 3 MILLIONTH MINIVAN
ST. LOUIS, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C)

marked its 3 millionth North American minivan sale today with a personal "thank you" and some gifts from Chrysler Chairman Lee A. Iacocca to the new owners.
Buyers of the milestone vehicle are Thomas L. and Laurie L. Pellett of Webster Groves, Mo. He is employed by a pension insurance company and she is a hospital kidney and liver transplant coordinator. They have two children, ages
29 months and 11 months. The new owners purchased a 1992 model Dodge Grand Caravan with integrated child seats from King Dodge of St. Louis. It is their first Chrysler product.
The symbolic 3 millionth minivan was built at Chrysler's St. Louis assembly plant where the Chrysler chairman was on hand for meetings.
Normally, new vehicles are delivered to the customer at the dealership, but because of the significance of the milestone purchase -- and the timing -- the presentation was made at the plant.
In acknowledgment of the occasion, the new owners were presented with apparel from Mopar Parts' Olympic wearables collection and a Mopar aftermarket Electronic Vehicle Security system, plus free Chrysler Service Contract coverage, which provides wraparound service coverage beyond the lengthy factory warranty.
The new vehicle traces its roots to 1983 when Chrysler introduced the versatile, fuel-efficient car-like minivan, creating an all-new segment in the automotive market. The unique vehicles were an immediate success and have been virtual sell-outs every year since.
With minivans sourced from one plant originally, sales in North America (U.S. and Canada) soared even more with the addition of a second plant, topping a million in October 1987, then hit 2 million in November 1989.
Redesigned for 1991 and with the addition of driver air bags and all-wheel drive, the Dodge, Plymouth and Chrysler minivan sales have continued to increase. Thus far in 1992 sales are running nearly 10 percent ahead of last year, giving Chrysler a 50-percent market share.
Chrysler has sold nearly 500,000 in the past year.
Of the 3 million North American sales, 2,666,582 have been in the U.S. and 333,418 in Canada. Sales by calendar year:

 1984 209,895
