CHRYSLER LISTS DOMESTIC CONTENT OF ALL ITS CARS, TRUCKS AND MPVS
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., March 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) today became the first and only automaker in the United States to make public the domestic content of each of its product lines.
Chrysler said that, on average, the 1992 vehicles it manufactures have a 92-percent domestic content, its transplant cars have 67 percent and its imported vehicles have 24 percent. The company said that, overall, the domestic content of all the vehicles Chrysler sells under the Chrysler/Plymouth, Dodge and Dodge Truck and Jeep/Eagle brands is 88 percent.
Chrysler said that vehicles it manufactures constitute more than 92 percent of its total U.S. sales.
Chrysler Chairman Lee A. Iacocca said, "Chrysler is taking the lead in detailing domestic content because there's a great deal of confusion about the issue, much of it intentional, and it needs to be cleared up.
"We believe the American car buyer wants to know exactly how domestic the vehicle he or she buys really is.
"The importers and the transplant builders have been working hard to create the impression that domestic content is a meaningless concept," Iacocca said.
"It isn't. Domestic content is an important measure for the American economy. Domestic content is 1.4 million jobs for Americans.
"Domestic content is one out of every eight local, state and federal tax dollars for schools and highways and bridges right here in America. Domestic content is a $28 billion swing in trade with Japan.
"What really counts," Iacocca said, "is who made the vehicle, where it was assembled and where the parts come from.
"Chrysler is revealing all its domestic content numbers," Iacocca said, "the best along with the worst.
"We are going to tell the whole story. For example, the St. Louis- built Chrysler Town and Country mini-van is 97 percent domestic content while the Mitsubishi-built Dodge Stealth is only 20 percent domestic."
Auto makers compute domestic content according to an Environmental Protection Agency definition. The EPA considers "domestic" any portion of a vehicle's engineering, manufacturing or marketing costs incurred in the United States or Canada. Chrysler said that the average Canadian content of all Chrysler's car and truck models is 6 percent.
"The federal government requires the computation from the domestic companies as part of the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) rules," Iacocca said. "Foreign companies should provide to the car-buying public the same information using the same EPA guidelines."
Chrysler will provide its 4,900 Chrysler/Plymouth, Dodge car and truck, and Jeep/Eagle dealers with an explanation of domestic content and the details about the domestic content of the car and truck lines they sell. Chrysler will provide all dealership salespersons with the same information so they can answer their customers' questions about domestic content.
