CHRYSLER FIRST-QUARTER INTERNATIONAL SALES INCREASE 17 PERCENT

CHRYSLER FIRST-QUARTER INTERNATIONAL SALES INCREASE 17 PERCENT
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) today announced first-quarter international sales increased 17 percent over the same period a year ago. Sales for the first three months of 1992 totaled 16,017 units, due primarily to strong Voyager sales throughout Europe, and significant sales increases in the Middle East and Taiwan.
For the month of March international sales were up 11 percent to 5,622 units.
"In spite of a soft European market, Chrysler Voyager sales continue to increase," said Joseph E. Cappy, Chrysler's vice president of International Operations. "It's further proof of the minivan's universal acceptance."
Sales in Europe for the Chrysler Voyager were almost twice last year's sales for the first three months, ending the first quarter at 5,380 units. For the month of March, sales were up 52 percent to 2,022.
Strong sales for the Spirit and Acclaim, Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler continue to lead sales in the Rest of World (ROW) countries, those countries outside Europe. For the first three months of 1992, sales have increased 26 percent to 5,231 units in ROW countries. Sales for the month of March increased 45 percent over the same period a year ago.
"Our strategy of consistent growth in ROW countries is working," said Cappy. "Our present distributors are doing a great job of selling and servicing our current products, and we're continuously looking for new opportunities to sell Chrysler products throughout the world."
Taiwan's sales increased to 2,182 units in the first quarter from 755 for the same period last year, an increase of 189 percent. It had a 94-percent sales increase for the month of March.
The Middle East countries had a 12-percent sales increase for the quarter, closing the three-month period at 2,407 units. Sales for the month of March were up 108 percent to 813 units.
Spirit/Acclaim sales were up 162 percent to 1,838 units for the first three months of 1992, and 64 percent to 618 units for the month. Cherokee and Wrangler sales were up 9 percent and 8 percent, respectively, for the month.
Dynasty/Salon, Fifth Avenue/Imperial, Spirit/Acclaim, Daytona, LeBaron Coupe and Convertible all had sales increases in the ROW countries over the same three-month period last year.
