CHRYSLER CORPORATION RESPONDS TO HOUSE ACTION ON MPV TARIFF AMENDMENT
WASHINGTON, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Motors issued the following statement in response to the House Ways and Means Committee action on the MPV tariff amendment:
We applaud this action by the House Ways and Means Committee. The MPV amendment closes a loophole which has allowed importers to manipulate our trade laws and avoid paying $300 million annually to the U.S. government. And statistics show that American consumers never received a price break from the importers as a result of that $300 million savings.
It is important to realize that this amendment is not some new tariff. It simply confirms and reinstates a 1989 finding by the U.S. Customs Service. In a move that defied logic, however, the Treasury Department overruled the Customs finding. We're pleased by the positive and logical decision of the Ways and Means Committee to restore the correct ruling of the Customs Service.
