CHRYSLER CORPORATION PICKS MCI'S GLOBAL DATA NETWORK
TO HELP AUTOMATE WORLDWIDE AUTO ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dodge Intrepid gets the leather and sport package, the Grand Cherokee gets power seats and CD stereo. Chrysler assembly line workers in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Austria receive information like this directly from Chrysler's centralized data centers on every vehicle they piece together through MCI's state-of-the-art global data network.
MCI Communications Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) announced today that it has signed a three-year, multi-million dollar agreement with Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) to provide telecommunications services, including the automaker's unique data global networking application.
Unlike any other automobile manufacturer, Chrysler feeds assembly data from three regional data centers, instead of installing and manning computers at each assembly plant. For example, Chrysler's new Eurostar minivan is built in Austria, with the help of MCI's transatlantic data line and satellite network, which transmits Chrysler's manufacturing specifications in near real-time from computers in the U.S. to the plant in Austria.
"Chrysler has realized substantial savings by enlisting MCI Global Data Services to link our assembly lines throughout the world," said Dennis Barile, Chrysler's manager of telecommunications. "Telecommunications is critical in feeding vehicle assembly information from Chrysler data centers to our manufacturing plants. MCI provides the network reliability that we must have in the highly competitive automotive industry."
MCI's new arrangement with Stentor, an alliance of Canada's major phone companies, will enable MCI to provide advanced services to Canadian customers, including Chrysler's Canada-based plants, over a first-of-its-kind seamless network. MCI has committed to spend between $150-$200 million on development of the platform, which should begin services by the first quarter of 1993.
Added Jonathan Crane, president of MCI's National Accounts Unit, "The arrangement between Chrysler and MCI exemplifies how telecommunications can serve as an innovative, competitive tool in information-intensive industries such as the automotive industry. MCI is proud to play such a vital role in connecting Chrysler's worldwide manufacturing operations."
In addition, Chrysler will use MCI's Vnet Service, a virtual private network service, for its outbound domestic and international voice traffic. MCI will connect Chrysler's worldwide locations to its Vnet Service for "on network" calling and other advanced features. MCI will also provide Chrysler with MCI Vnet Calling Cards, for travel convenience and an array of MCI advanced 800 services.
Chrysler Corporation, headquartered in Highland Park, is a diversified multi-billion dollar company involved in automotive manufacturing, electronics, and financial services.
Headquartered in Washington, D.C., MCI offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through a state-of-the- art global telecommunications network. The company, with 1991 revenue of nearly $10 billion, is the nation's second largest long distance provider and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
