CHRYSLER CFO JEROME YORK ISSUES STATEMENT ON HIS DECISION TO JOIN IBM CORPORATION

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a statement by Jerome B. York, executive vice president-finance and CFO, Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) on his decision to join IBM (NYSE: IBM) as senior vice president and CFO.
"My decision to leave Chrysler was the toughest I've made in my career. I've gone through two major industry downturns during my 14 years at Chrysler and I have recently participated in one of the most difficult but exciting turnarounds in American business. I've been in the trenches with the Chrysler team and have a lot of friends here and tremendous respect for their capabilities.
"While Chrysler still faces a number of financial challenges, I am confident the company has the leadership and the wherewithal to be a successful player in the automobile industry well into the 21st century.
"At the same time, the opportunity of working with Lou Gerstner and heading up the financial management of IBM is simply too exciting to ignore. I believe IBM will be one of the most challenging business situations in the '90s and I welcome the opportunity to be part of it."
