CHRYSLER AWARDS MORTON PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG PROGRAM

CHRYSLER AWARDS MORTON PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG PROGRAM
CHICAGO, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Morton International (NYSE: MII) today announced Morton has been awarded a program to supply Chrysler Corp. (NYSE: C) with passenger-side air bag modules for its new LH vehicles. The modules will incorporate Morton/OEA hybrid inflators, which use stored argon gas to inflate the bags, and are planned to be introduced into the LH models as early as 1994.
"We're delighted to earn more of Chrysler's business," said Kenneth D. Holmgren, president of Automotive Safety Products. "We have been supplying Chrysler driver-side air bags since 1988, and this represents the first opportunity to manufacture hybrid inflators."
Morton and OEA, Inc. have a teaming arrangement to produce hybrid inflators. Unlike all driver-side inflators, which employ a rapidly burning gas generant to create nitrogen gas, hybrid inflators contain argon gas stored at a pressure of approximately 3000 p.s.i. Both hybrid and pyrotechnic passenger inflators are expected to share the expanding market in the future.
Chrysler's LH vehicle, which is scheduled to be available in model year 1993, is a standard-sized passenger vehicle. It will have both driver and passenger air bag inflators supplied by Morton when it is introduced.
Morton International is a Chicago-based manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemicals, automotive inflatable restraint systems and salt. OEA, Inc. is a Denver-based, high technology manufacturer of aerospace and automotive safety products.
