CHRYSLER ANNOUNCES NEW CENTER FOR IMPROVED CUSTOMER SERVICE

NAPERVILLE, Ill., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Naperville will become home to Chrysler Corporation's (NYSE: C) new $20 million parts distribution and training center when the facility opens its doors 11 months from today's groundbreaking.
The Mopar Parts Division facility will employ about 125 people and serve 350 Chrysler dealers in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin. The center's 300,000 square feet of warehouse space will enable it to ship $3.5 million of its parts per week to dealers in the four-state area. In addition to parts distribution, three instructors will conduct classes daily for Chrysler dealer technicians to keep them up to date with the latest automotive technology.
"This investment is all about customer service," said Gary J. Michaud, manager of the Parts and Distribution Center. "The new center will help us get parts to our dealers faster, so they can offer better service to our customers."
The warehouse will have a state-of-the-art conveyor system that enables employees to do their jobs more efficiently. Hand-held radio frequency technology will move the distribution center toward becoming a paperless operation.
"Our members are very excited about the new facility and the technology that will help them do their jobs better," said Lou Henderson, president of UAW Local 1178.
The training facilities include two classrooms and 12 service bays compared to six classrooms and three service areas in the current training center. The new configuration will offer greater flexibility and more opportunity to technicians for hands-on instruction. The center will be linked to the Chrysler Satellite Network, one of the largest satellite communication systems in the world, which connects all of Chrysler's facilities and dealers.
The new operation replaces the current parts warehouse in Itasca and the former American Motors Distribution Center in Elk Grove Village. Employment at the two facilities will be consolidated at the center in Naperville.
"We're happy to welcome Chrysler to the community," said Naperville Mayor Samuel T. Macrane. "We are proud of our reputation for offering excellent services to our corporate residents." Macrane added that property taxes from the facility will be a great help to Naperville School District 204 and said students from the training center will bring added business to area restaurants and hotels.
Located in the High Grove Industrial Park at 1980 High Grove Lane, the center will be leased by Chrysler from Walsh, Higgins & Company. Walsh Construction Company of Illinois is the contractor on the project and A. Epstein & Sons is the architect.
