CHRYSLER AIR BAG PRODUCTION HITS 4 MILLION UNITS

HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) produced its 4-millionth air bag-equipped vehicle today at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit.
The milestone bag was installed in a dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. The Grand Cherokee is the only sport utility vehicle on the market with an air bag. Later this year, Chrysler will mark another safety milestone with the first standard driver-side air bag in a pickup truck.
Chrysler began installing driver-side air bags as standard equipment in six car lines in the 1988 model year. The company expanded installation to all its U.S.-built cars in the 1990 model year, and introduced driver air bags in minivans in January 1991 and in the Jeep Grand Cherokee in March 1991. More recently, driver and passenger air bags were introduced as standard equipment in the Dodge Intrepid, Eagle Vision and Chrysler Concorde in July 1992. Chrysler also introduced a specially designed integrated child safety seat in its minivan in 1992 and in the Concorde, Intrepid and Vision sedans in 1993.
In October 1993, the new 1994 Dodge Ram full-size pickup truck will become the first pickup truck on the market to include a standard driver-side air bag.
Chrysler estimates that since air bags have been available there have been approximately 45,000 deployments in Chrysler products, which have helped save drivers and passengers from serious injury or worse.
Chrysler emphasizes that air bags are designed to provide supplemental protection in head-on collisions and seat belts should always be worn.
