CHRIS EVERT FEATURED IN CONVERSE AIDS PSA

NORTH READING, Mass., Nov. 25 ~PRNewswire~ -- Converse President Gib Ford announced today the release of the second "Magic's Athletes Against AIDS" public service announcement (PSA) for television, featuring tennis star Chris Evert. The 30-second PSA supports AIDS awareness and education and features Evert speaking to the fact that "no one is immune" from contracting the AIDS virus.
The Evert AIDS PSA is being released by Converse in conjunction with World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, 1992. To ensure its broadcast during prime time, Converse has purchased a spot on FOX's Herman's Head, to air Sunday, Nov. 29, 1992, from 9:30-10 p.m. Herman's Head was selected because its target viewing audience is 18- to 34-year-olds, the primary age group affected by AIDS. In addition, FOX has offered to broadcast the Evert PSA on its network as a non-paid public service announcement.
As with the first PSA, Converse worked closely with the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) National AIDS Information and Education Program in Atlanta to produce the Evert PSA. The CDC's national AIDS hotline, 1-800-342-AIDS telephone number is featured at the end of both PSAs and Evert specifically states at the end of her impactful message, "For straight answers about AIDS, call the Centers for Disease Control's national AIDS hotline. Anybody can get AIDS."
As well as the purchased and non-paid time on the FOX network, the Converse PSA will be distributed through the CDC's nationwide network and through their school program.
Evert is the first female Converse(R) athlete to join the "Magic's Athletes Against AIDS(sm)" PSA campaign, which was formed last November shortly after Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced he was HIV positive and was retiring from professional basketball. Converse was the first of Johnson's longtime endorsers to step forward and announce its continued support, as well as developing a specific program to increase AIDS education and research.
Converse released its first 30-second PSA in January 1992, which featured Kevin "KJ" Johnson of the Phoenix Suns; NBA Rookie of the Year Larry Johnson of the Charlotte Hornets; and Rick Pitino, head basketball coach of the University of Kentucky. In the first PSA, the three men speak to the personal impact Magic Johnson's HIV positive announcement had on them, as well as reiterating that "anyone can get AIDS" and that "AIDS does not discriminate..."
"It was important for me to be one of 'Magic's Athletes Against AIDS' and to speak out with Converse on the importance of AIDS education," Evert said. "As I stated in the PSA, what scares me the most is we have no cure for AIDS and all it takes is one time with one partner. No one is invincible and it is critical that everyone's AIDS awareness level be dramatically increased so we can put a stop to this terrible disease."
As part of its long-term commitment in the battle against AIDS and the fight to find a cure, Converse President Gib Ford serves on the CDC's CEO advisory panel for its new program entitled, "Business Responds to AIDS" (BRTA), which will be launched in a nationwide teleconference from Atlanta on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1. He will address the Converse commitment to AIDS education and awareness in the workplace and the sporting goods industry during the teleconference speaking program. Ford will also be one of the CEO's featured in the CDC's public service print campaign which will appear in national newspapers, business magazines and on dioramas at major airports across the country.
"Converse stands by its commitment to AIDS education and research and to support Magic in his efforts to increase awareness about the spread of this disease," Ford said. "The release of this second PSA with Chris Evert is part of a larger program that Converse is implementing in 1993 through our involvement with the CDC's national 'Business Responds to AIDS' program and our own employee program. We strongly believe the only way to slow the spread of AIDS and HIV infection is through education and we are supporting this effort 100 percent."
Ford noted that Converse is continuing its $100,000 donation to the Magic Johnson Foundation in Los Angeles, which was established last year to support AIDS education and research programs.
Converse's advertising agency, Houston Effler & Partners of Boston, developed and produced the Chris Evert PSA.
Converse is the largest U.S. manufacturer of athletic footwear and is the official shoe of the National Basketball Association (NBA), USA Basketball, ?World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC), the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and the Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA).
