CHINA EASTERN OPENS NEW FREIGHT SERVICE TO CHINA

CHINA EASTERN OPENS NEW FREIGHT SERVICE TO CHINA
CHICAGO, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- A new air freight connection

between the U.S. Midwest and China will open Dec. 20 with the beginning of China Eastern Airlines (CEA) all-cargo service between Chicago and Shanghai.
The operation will use the world's newest cargo aircraft, CEA's freighter version of the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 wide-cabin trijet, which can carry up to 92 tons of payload.
The Shanghai-Chicago link will start with one flight weekly. The aircraft will arrive at O'Hare International Airport at 6 p.m. on Fridays, off-load inbound cargo and load outbound cargo for departure scheduled at 11:20 p.m.
CEA and the government of the People's Republic of China (PRC) are negotiating for additional landing rights in the United States to allow more frequent service in the future. Based in Shanghai, CEA is the second PRC carrier authorized to operate between China and the United States. The airline began passenger service from Shanghai to Los Angeles in August, with flights on Tuesdays and Fridays each week, using a new MD-11 passenger aircraft.
To support the new cargo service, CEA has established a local office at O'Hare International, P.O. Box 66608, A.M.F. O'Hare, Ill., 60666, with Zhu Guo Ka as general manager. Cargo handling at O'Hare is provided through a contract with Gateway Freight Service Inc., and aircraft services are handled by Hudson General Corporation.
CEA's MD-11F, with an overall length of 201 feet and inside cabin diameter of 18.6 feet, provides up to 15,514 cubic feet of cargo space on the main deck, plus another 6,850 cubic feet in three lower deck holds. The cabin will take 26 standard pallets of 96-by-125 inch size, or up to 34 pallets measuring 88-by-108 inches.
Main deck cargo is loaded through a large door, 11.6 feet by 8.5 feet, in the forward fuselage. The automated loading system features "smart" powered rollers to move cargo in and out with minimum manual effort.
Shipments can be loaded in containers or on standard air freight pallets with stack heights up to 97.5 inches for the main deck, or in containers or on pallets for the lower deck spaces. The over-size main deck door accommodates pallets up to 20 feet long.
In addition to the passenger and freighter models of the MD-11 now in service, China Eastern has ordered three more passenger versions, for delivery in 1992. The aircraft are powered by three Pratt & Whitney PW4460 engines, with 60,000 pounds takeoff thrust.
From its base in Shanghai, the airline serves approximately 50 cities in the PRC, regional routes to Hong Kong, and intercontinental operations to Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagasaki in Japan and to Los Angeles and now Chicago in the United States. Services to Europe and South America are planned for the future.
