CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES TAKES DELIVERY OF NEW MD-11 TRIJET AIRLINER
LONG BEACH, Calif., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- China Eastern Airlines today took delivery of a new MD-11 trijet airliner, the third in its fleet. It will be used to open services between cities in China and new destinations in Europe.
In Long Beach to accept the new transport was Hu Ding Zhou, vice president of China Eastern, with Wu Shuen Zhi, vice president of the China Aviation Supplies Corp., the equipment acquisition arm of the Civil Aviation Administration of China.
The new aircraft is scheduled to depart Sunday on the delivery flight to the airline's base at Shanghai. It will join two other MD-11s delivered to China Eastern last year and now in service. The first is a passenger model, the second an MD-11F (freighter) version.
The third MD-11 is another passenger model. Like its sister plane, it is equipped with 340 seats in a two-class arrangement. The MD-11 features a highly flexible cabin design that allows easy moving of seats, cabin divider walls, galleys and lavatories to change the layout in response to changes in passenger demand.
China Eastern now flies to Los Angeles and Seattle in the United States and to other cities in Asia and within China with its first passenger MD-11, and provides all-cargo service between Shanghai, Seattle and Chicago with the freighter aircraft.
China Eastern has experienced dispatch reliability exceeding 99 percent with its MD-11s -- the highest of any operator. The figure is an airline measure of departure delays due to mechanical causes; the high percentage indicates excellent performance of the aircraft and the operator's maintenance and flight crews.
Hu said the MD-11 now being delivered will equip the airline for expanded service, including operations from Shanghai and Beijing through Bahrain to the European cities of Brussels, Belgium and Madrid, Spain.
China Eastern also will begin new MD-11 passenger service between Shanghai and Chicago in the fall of 1992, completing an initial intercontinental expansion involving six cities in Europe, the Middle East and the United States in addition to several MD-11 routes within Asia.
"With the MD-11, China Eastern is able to offer travelers over the extremely long routes between China and the United States, and now Europe, the most advanced new aircraft available," Hu said. The aircraft has non-stop range capability of nearly 8,000 statute miles with a full load of passengers and baggage.
China Eastern became the first to launch new intercontinental operations from the Peoples' Republic of China after restructuring of the CAAC airlines during the late 1980s permitted new carriers to offer the service.
The MD-11 was chosen as the premier aircraft for the long-range fleet because it is the newest, most advanced aircraft available, with advantages of high technology, economic efficiency, passenger comfort and high reliability.
Two more passenger model MD-11s are scheduled for delivery later this year, to allow further expansion of intercontinental services and improved frequency of flights offered on existing routes.
China Eastern has operated Douglas Aircraft jetliners since 1983, when it acquired the first of 14 MD-82 twin jet transports now in its fleet. The short- to medium-range MD-82s link Shanghai with a network of cities within China and throughout the Pacific area.
