CHINA EASTERN AIRLINES RECEIVES FOURTH McDONNELL DOUGLAS MD-11
SHANGHAI, China, Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- China Eastern Airlines has received the fourth new McDonnell Douglas MD-11 trijet airliner for its growing international fleet. The aircraft will be used to expand services between cities in China and the airline's destinations in Europe and North America.
The new aircraft arrived in Shanghai Sunday, Oct. 11 after a delivery flight direct from California. It was built at the Long Beach, Calif., factory of the Douglas Aircraft division of McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD), and flew from Long Beach to Los Angeles International Airport before departing on its trans-Pacific delivery flight.
The new airliner joins three MD-11s now in service with China Eastern. Two of those are passenger models like the new delivery; one is an MD-11F (freighter) version.
Like its sister planes, the new MD-11 is equipped with 340 seats in a two-class arrangement. The MD-11 features a highly flexible cabin design that allows easy moving of seats, cabin divider walls, galleys and lavatories to change the layout in response to changes in passenger demand.
China Eastern now flies to Los Angeles and Seattle in the United States and to other cities in Asia and within China, and opened operations to the Middle East and Europe this summer. The freighter aircraft offers cargo service between Shanghai, Seattle and Chicago.
The airline also plans to open new MD-11 passenger service between Shanghai and Chicago in the fall of this year, completing its initial intercontinental expansion involving major cities in Europe, the Middle East and the United States.
China Eastern became the first to launch new intercontinental operations from the People's Republic of China after restructuring of the nation's aviation services during the late 1980s permitted new carriers to offer the service.
The MD-11 was chosen as the premier aircraft for the long-range fleet because it is the newest, most advanced aircraft available, with advantages of high technology, economic efficiency, passenger comfort and high reliability. The MD-11 gives travelers on the extremely long routes between China and the United States, and now Europe, an aircraft with non-stop range capability of nearly 8,000 statute miles with a full load of passengers and baggage.
One more passenger model MD-11 is scheduled for delivery later this year, to allow further expansion of intercontinental services and improved frequency of flights offered on existing routes. China Eastern also flies 14 McDonnell Douglas MD-82 transports.
China Eastern has experienced dispatch reliability exceeding 99 percent with its MD-11s -- the highest of any operator. The figure is an airline measure of departure delays due to mechanical causes; the high percentage indicates excellent performance of the aircraft and the operator's maintenance and flight crews.
