CHINA'S VICE PREMIER VISITS DOUGLAS AIRCRAFT

LONG BEACH, Calif., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- A delegation of high- ranking diplomats from the People's Republic of China (PRC), led by Vice Premier Qian Qichen, is visiting the Douglas Aircraft division of McDonnell Douglas today for a first-hand look at the plant's commercial aircraft assembly operations.
With Qian, who is also the PRC minister of foreign affairs, are Li Daoyu, the PRC ambassador to the United States; Qin Huasun, assistant foreign minister; Wang Xuexian, consul general in Los Angeles, and other foreign ministry officials.
The group was welcomed by McDonnell Douglas Chairman and Chief Executive John F. McDonnell and Robert H. Hood, president of the Douglas division.
Both executives are deeply involved in McDonnell Douglas activities in China. The corporation has a long-standing program for co-production of McDonnell Douglas twin jets on an assembly line in Shanghai and is developing a growing network of manufacturing resources in other cities in the PRC to supply parts to the assembly lines in Shanghai and in Long Beach.
Two of China's major airlines operate McDonnell Douglas transports. Shanghai-based China Eastern flies the long-range MD-11s on its intercontinental services and the twin engine MD-82s on regional and domestic routes. Another MD-11, the sixth, is scheduled for delivery later this year. China Northern, headquartered at Shengyang, also operates a fleet of MD-82s.
In addition to the plant tour, the visitors are getting an overview of McDonnell Douglas corporate activities, reviewing commercial products and proposed new programs and will be guests at a luncheon with a number of Douglas executives.
