CHILDREN EMBARK ON WORLD GEOGRAPHY ADVENTURE WITH MARIO BROS.; SOFTWARE TOOLWORKS SHIPS MARIO IS MISSING!(TM) CD

NOVATO, Calif., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Software Toolworks, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: TWRX), a leading publisher of education, entertainment and multimedia software, today announced the shipment of Mario Is Missing!(TM) CD Deluxe, a multimedia children's geography adventure featuring the popular Super Mario Bros.(TM) video game characters, licensed from Nintendo. Mario is Missing! CD Deluxe is available through retail locations nationwide on CD-ROM for MS-DOS for a suggested list price of $69.95.
The title became a best seller this summer on the Super NES(R), and is being incorporated into school geography curriculums on the MS-DOS diskette. Davidson & Associates, Inc., a leading distributor of software for school markets, has created an exciting teachers' Classroom Resource Manual with program materials and special student activities. Mario Is Missing! is currently undergoing translation to French, Italian, German and Spanish for world wide distribution (except Japan) on a number of platforms.
"Children all over the world know and love the Mario Bros.," said Bob Lloyd, president and CEO, of The Software Toolworks. "By using the characters to capture a child's attention, we create educational programs that teach children that learning can be fun. Mario CD Deluxe adds multimedia technology, and a curriculum designed by educators and child development experts, to offer parents cutting-edge multimedia products that are also powerful educational tools."
Mario Is Missing! CD Deluxe uses multimedia to bring geography to life with video clips and photographs of 25 cities, real maps, famous landmarks, digitized and sound effects, original music, 256-color animations, illustrations of city architecture and landmarks, and information on important places, events and people. The program teaches problem solving and critical thinking skills, world geography, navigation and map reading skills, encourages note-taking and organization, and imparts historical and multi-cultural information -- all while engaging children in a cool adventure with Super Mario Bros.
"Mario Is Missing! CD Deluxe takes advantage of technology to combine visual stimulation with direct interaction to increase retention. We call this `stealth learning', being involved in a game and learning as you play" commented Ed Bernstein, sr. vice president of edutainment and multimedia products.
In Mario Is Missing!, the evil Bowser is up to no good. As Luigi, Mario's brother, stands helplessly by, Bowser imprisons Mario in his Antarctic castle. Bowser uses his powerful Passcode Operated Remote Transport And Larceny System (PORTALS) to send his terrible turtles, the Koopas, to cities all over the world. Once the Koopas arrive, no city is safe. The vile critters trash historical landmarks, loot priceless artifacts, and sell the ancient treasures to fund Bowser's plot to melt Antarctica and flood the entire planet! Using Luigi's control panel, children navigate the streets of cities all over the world (such as Bombay, Moscow, Athens, Nairobi and Tokyo), interview citizens, discover clues and return lost artifacts all in an attempt to save Mario.
Mario Is Missing! is the first title in a series of Mario edutainment programs developed by The Software Toolworks. The series includes two product lines: The Mario Discovery Series for children 6 year old and above and Mario's Early Years for children 3 to 6 years. All the products feature Nintendo's famous Super Mario Bros. characters in fun and engaging adventures that teach children important learning, cognitive and social skills.
Five titles, each focusing on a separate educational subject, will be available for the 1993 holiday season. From the Mario Discovery Series: Mario Is Missing! for MS-DOS(R) disk, MS-DOS CD-ROM, Macintosh(R), Nintendo Entertainment System(R), and Super Nintendo Entertainment System(R); and Mario's Time Machine, a history adventure for MS-DOS disk, Nintendo Entertainment System(R), and Super Nintendo Entertainment System(R). For younger children, three Mario's Early Years! titles will be available on MS-DOS disk: Mario's Early Years!(TM) Pre-School Fun, Mario's Early Years!(TM) Fun With Numbers! and Mario Early Years!(TM) Fun With Letters.
