CHIEFTAIN PURCHASES U.S. GULF PRODUCING PROPERTIES
 EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Chieftain

International Inc. (AMEX, Toronto, Alberta: CID) has acquired interests in two offshore producing properties in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
The properties add the equivalent of approximately 44 billion cubic feet (36 bcf net of royalties) of proved and probable natural gas to Chieftain's reserves. The company's share of acquisition costs was approximately U.S. $20 million, exclusive of costs of developing currently non-producing reserves. The properties also have further potential for reserve additions through exploration and development.
The company's share of 1992 production from the two purchases is expected to average 12 million cubic feet per day of gas and 300 barrels per day of oil and natural gas liquids. The properties cover 14,700 gross (5,400 net) acres in U.S. federal waters in the Mustang Island area, offshore Texas, and the South Pass area, offshore Louisiana.
In the Mustang Island area, Chieftain purchased interests as follows: 50 percent in Block 784, containing the main area of producing reserves; 17.5 percent in Block 758 on which production facilities are located; and a 50 percent interest in a 720-acre portion of Block A-2. In the South Pass area, Chieftain acquired a 44.5 percent interest in the southern half of Block 37.
The properties were purchased with working capital which was U.S. $42.7 million at Sept. 30, 1991. Chieftain has no debt.
