CHICAGO-BASED RAND McNALLY NAMES NEW CHAIRMAN, PRESIDENT

SKOKIE, Ill., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- At Rand McNally's board of directors meeting on May 25, Andrew McNally IV, 53, will become chairman of the board at the suburban Chicago-based company and will continue as chief executive officer. He will succeed his father, Andrew McNally III, who becomes chairman emeritus. John S. Bakalar, 45, will succeed McNally as president and also will become chief operating officer. Bakalar was formerly the company's executive vice president.
Bakalar is the first non-family member to become president of the 137-year-old company. He joined Rand McNally in 1976 as treasurer and later became vice president of finance before he was named executive vice president in 1986.
"We believe this change makes good business sense and serves the best interests of all of Rand McNally's constituencies," said Andrew McNally IV. "I will be able to focus more on strategic issues and key customer relations, while John Bakalar is well-prepared to assume additional responsibilities for all of our business units."
Rand McNally has five business groups: Book & Media Services, DocuSystems, Publishing, Rand McNally-Transportation Data Management, and Retail & Catalog. With the new change, Book & Media Services, the company's largest unit, will report directly to Bakalar, as all of the other groups have been doing.
"Rand McNally will continue to be privately held, and the structure of the company and our business units remains the same," McNally added. "John Bakalar and I have worked side-by-side on a wide range of business issues for many years, and we expect little change in that relationship. Our aim is to make sure Rand McNally meets the demands of the 21st century."
Rand McNally's Book & Media Services is the third largest book printer and binder in the United States, with specialties in manufacturing encyclopedias, directories, and children's books. The DocuSystems Group is the world's largest producer of airline and surface transportation tickets and baggage tags.
Perhaps the best-known unit of Rand McNally is its Publishing Group, which is the world's largest commercial mapmaker. It publishes road maps, world atlases, and the Rand McNally Road Atlas, published annually since 1924. Rand McNally-TDM is the leading provider of mileage and routing information to truckers and shippers. The Retail & Catalog Group has more than 20 Map & Travel Stores in major metropolitan areas throughout the U.S.
Andrew McNally IV took over as president of Rand McNally in 1974, when Andrew McNally III became chairman of the board. Andrew McNally IV is the fifth-generation McNally to head the company. The Rand family has not been involved with the company since 1899.
Rand McNally was founded in 1856 as a job printing shop in downtown Chicago.
