CHICAGO SUN-TIMES ANNOUNCES NEW MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE
NEWSPAPER NAMES VEITCH GENERAL MANAGER; MCKEEL BECOMES PUBLISHER
CHICAGO, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of a new management structure announced today, the Chicago Sun-Times named Michael J. Veitch to the new position of executive vice president and general manager, effective May 18.
Sam S. McKeel, president and chief executive officer of The Sun-Times Co., will assume the additional title of publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times.
In tandem with these changes, editor and senior vice president Dennis A. Britton is being promoted to editor and executive vice president.
Veitch, 46, has been executive vice president and eastern sales manager of Cresmer, Woodward, O'Mara & Ormsbee, Inc., a New York-based newspaper sales representative firm. His 23 years of newspaper experience encompass a variety of roles, including advertising sales, special projects and general manager at both community and major market newspapers, including the Washington Post and the New York Times.
McKeel and Britton have been two of the key executives at the newspaper and the holding company the past three years:
-- McKeel, 65, president and CEO of The Sun-Times Co., becomes publisher of the newspaper, a role he has been filling unofficially for the past 1-1/2 years. He joined the Sun-Times as president and CEO in June 1989 following 35 years with Knight-Ridder, Inc.
-- Britton, 51, became editor of the Chicago Sun-Times in December 1989 after 23 years with the Los Angeles Times, most recently as deputy managing editor in charge of its national, international and business coverage.
In the new post of executive vice president and general manager of the newspaper, Veitch, along with the newspaper's senior vice presidents, "will be responsible for making the Chicago Sun-Times the most customer-friendly and responsive newspaper in the country," McKeel said.
Veitch reports directly to McKeel; the newspaper's marketing, business and administrative departments will report to Veitch.
In addition, senior vice presidents James W. Artz, Thomas L. Foster and Thomas J. Neri will join McKeel, Britton and Veitch as an executive committee of the Chicago Sun-Times, responsible for oversight in the total newspaper operation.
In making today's announcement, McKeel said "Mike Veitch brings to the Chicago Sun-Times the experience, knowledge and creativity necessary to lead this newspaper into the 21st century. The Sun-Times management team is one of the best in the nation, and Mike brings dimensions to this exceptional team that will make it even better.
"As general manager," McKeel noted, "Mike will be a catalyst in making the Chicago Sun-Times a market-driven newspaper, focused on serving all of our customers -- advertisers and readers -- in a manner that will be unique to American newspapers."
"The Sun-Times has assembled an excellent group of talented executives and managers," Veitch said. "As general manager, I'll be coordinating their efforts in a single, sharply focused effort that will be highly market-oriented."
In his additional role as publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times, McKeel said he will "serve as the bridge between all aspects of our newspaper business -- the news and business sides. I will be focusing more on the overall strategies, policies and directions of the newspaper."
"Dennis Britton has proven himself as one of the top editors in the country, and he has demonstrated time and again his commitment to Chicago and to the Chicago Sun-Times," McKeel said. "This promotion reflects those accomplishments and his role as a partner with Mike Veitch in our new company structure."
The Sun-Times Co. owns the Chicago Sun-Times, the nation's ninth largest metropolitan daily newspaper, as well as Pioneer Press and Star Publications, publishers of community newspapers in the Chicago suburbs.
