CHICAGO FIRMS MAKE MCI THEIR CHOICE FOR LONG DISTANCE
Quaker, Whitman and Inland Sign Multi-Million Dollar Agreements
CHICAGO, July 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In separate agreements with a combined value of several million dollars, three major Chicago-based companies have chosen MCI Telecommunications Corporation (NASDAQ: MCIC) to provide a variety of long distance services.
The agreements with The Quaker Oats Company, Whitman Corporation and Inland Steel Company are the latest in a series of major contracts MCI has received to serve large corporations and government agencies nationwide.
 The Quaker Oats Company
Under a three-year, multi-million dollar agreement for telecommunications services, The Quaker Oats Company has chosen MCI as its primary long distance carrier.
Quaker, the worldwide marketer of consumer grocery products, will use MCI Vnet, a virtual private network service, for its outbound domestic and international voice traffic, connecting an estimated 180 Quaker U.S. locations; MCI 800 Service; Vnet calling cards and switched data services. The agreement includes two one-year renewal options.
"MCI provided cost-effective and innovative solutions for Quaker's voice and data traffic, and it is our expectation that MCI will continue to provide excellent customer service in handling the company's telecommunications requirements," said Jim LeGere, vice president for information services at Quaker.
MCI Vnet will support Quaker's Genesis Project, the most intensive information services undertaking in the history of the company. Quaker's laptop computer users will be linked to the company's volume tracking system -- which provides gross sales figures by sales organization and product -- by calling an 800 number to access the network. The agreement also calls for Quaker to convert to MCI 800 Service for the toll-free consumer response numbers it uses on its packaging.
"We look forward to a longstanding relationship with Quaker, and are pleased to have the opportunity to provide these advanced network services to one of the world's premier food companies," said MCI President and Chief Operating Officer Daniel F. Akerson.
 Whitman Corporation
Whitman Corporation and its three subsidiaries have selected MCI to provide an array of long distance and telecommunications services for all Whitman locations nationwide.
Services provided under the contract include MCI Vnet; MCI 800 Service; and data services.
Whitman Corporation has three major subsidiaries: Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers, the largest independent Pepsi bottler in the United States; Hussmann Corporation, the world's largest producer of refrigeration and merchandising equipment for the grocery industry; and Midas International, the world's leading franchised automotive service operation with more than 2,400 shops in nine countries.
"We are pleased to be helping The Whitman Corporation achieve its corporate goals with the aid of long distance telecommunications services designed to meet their unique needs," said Akerson.
 Inland Steel Company
Under a three-year, $3 million agreement with Inland Steel Company, MCI will provide a variety of telecommunications services for the steel products manufacturer.
Services provided under the contract include MCI Vnet; MCI Calling Card; data services and MCI 800 service.
"We are able to work with MCI to develop a package that met our specific communications needs," said Jim Reddel, Inland's telecommunications adviser. "This new agreement will provide us with a wide range of high quality telecommunications services while significantly lowering our costs."
"We have a strong relationship with Inland and we look forward to supporting their efforts to achieve greater success with the aid of our long distance telecommunications services," said Akerson.
A subsidiary of Chicago-based Inland Steel Industries, Inland Steel Company has operations in several Midwest locations. The firm's steel making plant is located in East Chicago, Ind. I/N Tek and I/N KOTE, the company's new joint venture continuous cold mill and coating facilities, are located in New Carlisle, Ind.
MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest all-digital networks. The company, with 1991 revenue of approximately $9.5 billion, is the second largest long distance provider in the United States and has more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries.
