CHICAGO AUTO SHOW A SELLOUT

CHICAGO, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In a 12-minute flurry of bidding Wednesday, the assembled automotive manufacturers of the world completely bought out the available exhibition space for the 1994 Chicago Auto Show at Chicago's McCormick Place, totaling 675,000 square feet.
The show, going into its 86th run in February, is known as being the single most important consumer show of its type in the country.
"Everything that we do at the Chicago Auto Show is designed to make the relationship of the manufacturer and the consumer the most beneficial to both, which you don't see addressed as well at other shows," commented Jerry H. Cizek III, president of the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA), which operates the show at the mammoth lakefront venue. "Clearly, the manufacturers realize this is where their audience is. It was really exciting to see the enthusiasm they had as each exhibit space was picked."
Cizek continued, "One of the reasons manufacturers prefer the method we use for designation of spaces is that it's based on total car and truck registrations in the U.S., not some arcane formula, the constraints of the building, or the whim of the promoter."
CATA Auto Show Chairman Jerry Haggerty said the drawing for exhibit spaces always makes him think he's watching a multi-million-dollar chess match.
"Each company has a specific marketing game plan. The size of the space they choose, the proximity to their main competition, the products they pick to entice the public to their spot, the entertainment, celebrities, sound, lighting. You just can't help but marvel at the strategy and appreciate that it's a very high-stakes game," said Haggerty. "But it has to be that way. They know when they come to Chicago in February that almost a million potential customers will be coming through the doors. It's designed for the buyer, not a journalist from Liechtenstein."
The 86th Annual Chicago Auto Show runs from the 5th to the 13th of February, 1994.
