CHEVY LIMITS FABLED CORVETTE ZR-1 TO 380 PER YEAR

CHEVY LIMITS FABLED CORVETTE ZR-1 TO 380 PER YEAR
ROCHESTER, Mich., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The fabled Chevrolet

Corvette ZR-1 will become a truly limited-production sports car beginning in 1993, with a maximum of 380 units per year available for sale in the U.S. through 1995, Chevrolet General Manager Jim C. Perkins revealed today.
"The ZR-1 option is a great image-builder for Chevrolet. It allows us to showcase technology that just isn't available anywhere else," Perkins said.
"However, the ZR-1 competes in a very limited market niche, and our decision to limit production reflects that reality."
Originally equipped with a super-sophisticated 375 horsepower V-8 dual overhead cam engine built by Mercury Marine, the ZR-1 has been touted as a "tiger or a pussycat," because it can deliver gut-wrenching acceleration one minute, yet get a respectable 25 miles per gallon in steady-state highway driving.
The 1993 ZR-1 is uprated to 405 horsepower.
The Corvette, billed as America's only true production sports car, celebrates its 40th anniversary in the 1993 model year. The millionth Corvette was built July 2 at the GM Bowling Green Assembly Plant.
The ZR-1 became a legend even before it went on sale in the fall of 1989 as a 1990 model, attracting unheard-of attention from news media around the world. Enthusiast magazines did some 40 glowing cover stories on the car, with headlines like "The Corvette from Hell."
About 4,800 Corvettes equipped with the ZR-1 option have been sold since the car was introduced. Beginning with the 1993 model year, approximately 300 dealers in the U.S. will be qualified to sell and service the Corvette ZR-1.
