CHEVY ANNOUNCES PLAYER AND COACH OF YEAR

/ADVANCE/WARREN, Mich., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Calbert Cheaney, Indiana University's senior forward, will be named Chevrolet's NCAA basketball Player of the Year, and Vanderbilt's Eddie Fogler will be named Coach of the Year on Saturday, April 3.
The announcements are part of the Chevrolet Collegiate Scholarship Program which has contributed $4.4 million to the general scholarship funds of colleges and universities across the country during the program's 22-year history.
Trophies will be presented by Jeff Hurlbert, Chevrolet general marketing manager, and George Whitlow, chairman of the Chevrolet National Dealer Council, during halftime of the first NCAA Basketball Tournament Semi-final game on the CBS television network on Saturday. CBS Sports selects the player and coach of the year. Chevrolet will also contribute $2,500 to the general scholarship fund of the coach's school.
Cheaney finished his brilliant collegiate playing career as the Big Ten's all-time leading scorer and its Player of the Year. Fogler guided Vanderbilt to the most wins in the school's history this year and to its first SEC championship since 1974.
The Chevrolet Collegiate Scholarship Program is the longest-running automotive-sports scholarship program in the country. Television networks choose the most valuable players of each team in televised NCAA football and basketball games throughout their respective seasons, and Chevrolet contributes $1,000 to each school's general scholarship fund.
Toward the end of each basketball and football season a player and coach or coaches of the year are similarly selected, with Chevrolet donating $2,500 to each coach's school.
The scholarship funds reward students for their academic achievements and assist the financially needy. Each college or university administers its scholarship fund independently for the benefit of all students.
