CHEVRON TO CLOSE SEATTLE MARKETING OFFICE

CHEVRON TO CLOSE SEATTLE MARKETING OFFICE
 SEATTLE, March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevron U.S.A. Products Company

today announced that it will close its Northwest Marketing Region Seattle office during the summer. The region will be merged with Chevron's West Central Region headquartered in San Ramon, Calif.
Approximately 95 Seattle-based management and staff employees will be affected. Chevron is currently offering U.S. employees a special temporary enhancement to the Chevron Retirement Plan. To achieve employee reductions in the Seattle office, however, some relocations and involuntary terminations will be necessary.
At present, no changes are planned for the company's service station/jobber network and field sales personnel, lubricant sales, asphalt plants, pipeline and terminal operations throughout the area.
The Northwest Region manages Chevron's marketing operations in Washington, Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada and Wyoming.
The announcement came on the heels of a recently reported 40 percent reduction in Chevron Corporation's worldwide earnings, including a significant loss in its U.S. refining and marketing operations. Last year, the financial burden on these operations was increased by expenses exceeding $1 million per day to comply with environmental rules. During the coming five years, more than $2 billion will be invested to conform to new regulations.
The corporation is undertaking a number of actions to reduce costs, including sale or closure of marginal facilities and properties, office consolidations, and total employee reductions of at least 2,500. Recently, the company announced a major streamlining of its Port Arthur, Texas, Refinery.
Chevron has four other marketing regions headquartered in Atlanta, Houston, Honolulu and La Habra, Calif. Last year, the company's Mid-Atlantic Region office in Baltimore was merged into the Southern Region in Atlanta.
