CHEVRON SELECTS DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION AS PRIME CONTRACTOR FOR MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR SYSTEMS INTEGRATION PROJECT

MAYNARD, Mass.-- Nov. 17 ~PRNewswire~ -- Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) has been selected by Chevron for a two year, $5.8 million project to provide the fully integrated C~SMART (Convenience Store Marketing And Reporting Transaction) solution to automate business and accounting practices at 675 of Chevron's Food Mart Convenience stores and gasoline stations nationwide. Digital's business partner for this leading-edge project is The Software Works! (TSW!).
In addition to participating in the development of the hardware and software requirements for this solution, Digital will provide all the services associated with the project. This includes software customization, project management, training, equipment staging, site preparation, delivery and installation, pilot evaluation, telephone support services and maintenance.
"Our project with Chevron reflects Digital's commitment to providing oil and gas customers with complete solutions to business problems in all segments of the industry. It is critical that we work with our customers every step of the way to insure that solutions successfully meet business needs," said Randy Levine, Digital Oil & Gas Industry Director.
The integrated solution will consist of a wide area network of Digital's personal computers located at each retail location linked via PATHWORKS, Digital's network operating system for personal computers. These personal computers will run Digital's mail and networking software integrated with the TSW! Station Management System.
Specially developed for convenience stores, the C~SMART solution will automate the collection of sales data from electronic cash registers. Once gathered, the data will enable store managers to perform required accounting, inventory reporting, manpower, scheduling, and other activities. On a daily basis this store data will be transferred via store-based satellite links to a subsidiary accounting center in Pennsylvania. Here information will be verified and analyzed on a VAX 4000 system.
This solution will provide accurate, timely information to all levels of Chevron management allowing them to better manage product inventories, margins and store services. This C~SMART project recognizes Digital as a quality supplier to Chevron and it strengthens the current strategic business alliance between the two corporations. "To remain a leader in our marketplace we need to be able to react quickly to the needs of our customers and our facilities in a timely manner. The Digital solution provides us with the technologies and services required to meet this goal and enhance our competitive edge," said Jeff McElroy, manager - Subsidiary Operations for Chevron U.S.A.
