CHEVRON RECEIVES 1993 SOUTHEAST UNITED STATES REGIONAL WETLANDS CONSERVATION AWARD

NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CHV) has been awarded a 1993 Southeast United States Regional Wetlands Conservation Award by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (USF&W). In a ceremony held at Chevron's Romere Pass facility, Ken Derr, chairman and CEO of Chevron, accepted the award from James Pulliam, regional director for the USF&W Service. This is the first USF&W award granted to a company or individual for conservation efforts within the southeast Louisiana refuges.
The Regional Wetlands Conservation Award is presented to individuals or groups in recognition of their efforts to protect, restore, and/or enhance wetlands. Criteria include the amount of wetlands restored, the type (bottomland, hardwood, coastal), benefits to wildlife, and environmental leadership.
In the Delta National Wildlife Refuge Project, Chevron worked in partnership with the regional USF&W Service to restore and protect a sensitive waterfowl habitat that was being lost to wetland erosion. Over several hundred acres have been restored, and additional wetlands are being restored and created with each day. The area is a major refuge for thousands of migratory waterfowl and many species of wildlife native to South Louisiana.
The project, which began in 1990, is "causing silt laden waters to flood into the marsh, depositing silt, resulting in high quality wildlife habitat being created," said Pulliam. Derr stressed that "this type of partnership between a private company and governmental agencies is something Chevron is working very hard to achieve."
The Romere Pass facility is located within the Delta National Wildlife Refuge at the southern tip of Plaquemines Parish. Chevron has operated within the refuge since 1949. Ninety-five percent of all the oil and gas revenues from the 400 national wildlife refuges in the lower 48 states comes from Delta National.
Chevron Corp. is the third largest petroleum company in the United States and employs more than 3,200 employees in Louisiana.
