CHEVRON PIPELINE CO. REPORTS CLEANUP OPERATIONS UNDERWAY ON OVERNIGHT LEAK IN NORTH RICHMOND

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevron Pipeline Company personnel, contractors and clean-up equipment are involved in the mop-up operation from a pipeline leak that occurred last night in north Richmond.
Containment boom has been installed in Gertrude Ditch and portions of Wildcat and Castro creeks to restrict movement of a resulting gasoline sheen, which was observed in an 8 a.m. helicopter overflight. There are no residential or commercial facilities near the site, and no injuries or harm to wildlife have been reported.
As a precautionary measure, boom also has been placed across lower Castro Creek to prevent the fuel from moving into San Pablo Bay, which is located about one-half mile away.
Yesterday evening a gasoline odor was reported, and Chevron personnel immediately began investigating the situation. By 1 a.m. today, the source had been isolated to the Gertrude Creek area and the Bay Area Pipeline was immediately shut down and drained.
Preliminary estimates are that, at most, 3,000 gallons of gasoline may have been released, but the company believes the amount will be lower.
The pipeline carries gasoline, diesel and jet fuel to four Chevron terminals: Sacramento, Avon (Martinez), Banta (Tracy) and San Jose. The company expects to meet all customer supply needs.
All proper agency notifications were made immediately upon determination of the problem. U.S. Coast Guard, California Dept. of Fish and Game, and State Fire Marshall personnel are observing the clean-up operation.
