CHEVRON CHRISTENS NEW TANKER, THE CONDOLEEZZA RICE, IN BRAZIL

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- In a ceremony held today at the Ishikawajima do Brasil Estaleiros S.A. (ISHIBRAS) shipyard in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dr. Condoleezza Rice christened Chevron's newest tanker named after her as a director of Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CHV).
This latest addition brings Chevron's worldwide fleet to 40. Under a contract with Mitsui & Co. of Japan, the CONDOLEEZZA RICE is the last one in a series of three identical 136,000 deadweight ton, double hull tankers built by ISHIBRAS. The others were delivered in October 1992 and February 1993. With this new vessel, Chevron Shipping Company now operates 10 double hull tankers.
The CONDOLEEZZA RICE, which is part of an ongoing Chevron fleet retirement and renewal program, will be able to carry approximately one million barrels of crude oil on each voyage. This size will allow it to be utilized effectively in a number of regular Chevron trades to the United States from West Africa, Indonesia and the Middle East.
Condoleezza Rice is a member of the faculty of the Department of Political Science at Stanford University and will become the University's youngest and first woman provost on Sept. 1, 1993. She returned to Stanford after spending a number of years in Washington, D.C., culminating with her position as Special Assistant to President Bush for National Security Affairs and Senior Director of Soviet Affairs for the National Security Council. Before that, she was Director of Soviet and East European Affairs, and between 1986-1987 had been on a fellowship as Special Assistant to the Director of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She joined Chevron Corporation's Board in 1991, and also serves on the Board of Directors of Transamerica, Hewlett Packard and the Rand Corporation.
