CHEVRON CHEMICAL COMPANY CEDAR BAYOU POLYETHYLENE UNIT
DEMONSTRATES THE EXCELLENT OPERABILITY OF THE BP GAS PHASE PROCESS
HOUSTON, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevron Chemical Co. announced today that after a year of operation, the company is extremely pleased with the performance of its Cedar Bayou BP Gas Phase Polyethylene Unit. Both the linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) products made at Cedar Bayou have found ready acceptance in the U.S. marketplace by exhibiting good quality and consistent product properties.
The LLDPE and HDPE lines have both been run at above design rates. The HDPE train is achieving in excess of 30 percent above design capacity, not only in its traditional injection molding grades, but in new high melt index grades not previously made on this process. Because of the product quality and the successful start-up, Chevron was able to switch all its HDPE injection molding production to the new unit within six months of coming on stream.
Particular operating benefits of the BP Gas Phase Process are seen to be the controllability of the process in both HDPE and LLDPE operation, which enable stable reactor conditions and precise control of such parameters as Melt Index and Density. The excellent control of the system allows transitions from one product grade to another to be made with minimal generation of off grade products.
The HDPE operation has demonstrated its capability to run at 100 percent on stream time through the entire Cedar Bayou HDPE grade range without the need to stop production or to reduce rates below design levels while transitioning between grades.
George Scott, vice president and general manager of Chevron Chemical Company's Olefins and Derivatives Division, says: "We are pleased with the excellent start-up of the BP-process plant. Much to the credit of the Cedar Bayou operations group augmented by BP's Start-up Team, both reactor lines were started safely with only minimal mechanical or process difficulties. After a year's operation, the plant is essentially sold out."
John Turnbull, chief executive of BP Chemicals Polymer Division, says: "We are delighted that Chevron has done so well. This success has been brought about by the total quality approach and team working practiced by Chevron and BP Chemicals, building on the unique strengths of the Gas Phase Process. We continue to cooperate to achieve benefits from further improvements in our process."
The Chevron Cedar Bayou Plant is the second U.S.A. Licensee's plant to start up using the BP Gas Phase Process. Two more BP Gas Phase plants will be commissioned by Licensees in the U.S.A. in the next three years.
