CHEVRON CHEMICAL CO. SELLS AGRICULTURAL PRODUCT LINES TO TOMEN CORP.
SAN RAMON, Calif., April 13 -- Chevron Chemical Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Chevron Corp., today announced the sale to Tomen Corp. of manufacturing technology, marketing rights outside the United States and supply contracts for three of its agricultural chemical products lines, ORTHENE, SELECT and MONITOR.
The terms of the sale have not been disclosed. No transfer of employees or facilities is included in the transaction. Chevron Chemical will continue to manufacture the insecticide ORTHENE for Tomen.
"This sale represents a significant step in completing Chevron Chemical's intention to withdraw from the agricultural chemical business," said Chevron Chemical President John Peppercorn. "We are pleased to be able to sell these businesses to a valued associate interested in their continued growth."
Tomen, formerly Toyo Menka Kaisha Ltd., has been an overseas distributor of Chevron Chemical agricultural products since 1952. A major international trading company, Tomen, based in Tokyo, has been actively expanding its activities in agricultural chemicals.
ORTHENE, developed by Chevron and introduced commercially in 1973, is a broad-spectrum insecticide that can be used effectively on a wide range of crops with low environmental impact. SELECT, a grass herbicide developed by Chevron for use on broadleaf crops, was first offered for sale internationally in 1987. MONITOR is a fast-acting, economical insecticide sold internationally since 1971.
