CHEVRON, AS OPERATOR, ANNOUNCES OFFSHORE MISSISSIPPI NATURAL GAS DISCOVERY IN MOBILE BLOCK 861

CHEVRON, AS OPERATOR, ANNOUNCES OFFSHORE MISSISSIPPI
NATURAL GAS DISCOVERY IN MOBILE BLOCK 861
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevron U.S.A. Production Company, Unocal Exploration Corporation, and Pennzoil Exploration and Production Company announced today the confirmation of a major find offshore Mississippi in the Norphlet Trend. This significant natural gas discovery is in Mobile Block 861 in Federal Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) waters about 17 miles south of Pascagoula, Miss.
Chevron U.S.A., as operator, holds a 50 percent interest in the well, with Unocal and Pennzoil each holding a 25 percent interest.
This confirmation was Chevron's third major successful venture in the Norphlet Trend during 1991. Others are Mobile Block 916, in which Chevron's partners are Unocal Exploration Corporation (operator) and Offshore Bechtel Associates Limited, an affiliate of Bechtel Energy Resources Corporation; and Destin Dome Block 56, in which Chevron's partners are Murphy Exploration and Production Company, Murphy Oil U.S.A. and Conoco.
Drilled to a total depth of 22,103 feet, the OCS-G-5062 confirmation well in Block 861 encountered more than 360 feet of potential gas pay in the Norphlet sandstone. This well offset a previously drilled test, which was plugged after experiencing mechanical problems during drilling operations.
"We are encouraged by the results of our efforts in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. Chevron considers natural gas to be the primary fuel that can help reduce our dependence on foreign energy sources while providing a clean form of energy," said Ray Galvin, President of Chevron U.S.A. Production Company.
