CHEVROLET TO USE MONTE CARLO NAME ON NEW FRONT-WHEEL-DRIVE COUPE

CHEVROLET TO USE MONTE CARLO NAME ON NEW FRONT-WHEEL-DRIVE COUPE
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors' Chevrolet Motor Division will stamp its venerable Monte Carlo nameplate on a swoopy front-wheel-drive coupe it will introduce in "a couple of years," General Manager Jim Perkins said here today.
Perkins also confirmed that a four-door concept vehicle unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show is a close copy of the new Prizm sedan being prepped for a 1993 launch under Chevy's Geo brand of import- flavored vehicles.
Today's Monte Carlo announcement confirms speculation that Chevrolet is working on a new-generation mid-size coupe featuring the kind of performance and appearance attributes that characterized the famous Monte Carlos of the '70s and '80s.
Perkins told a news conference "although it would be more convenient to build the new car on the Lumina platform, we're not locked in." He said the decision is pending possible consolidation of several GM platforms.
He said the car is "just around the corner. And if you were to guess a couple of years, you wouldn't be far off."
A concept coupe wearing a Monte Carlo badge is on display here.
Perkins said clinic results indicate the Monte Carlo nameplate has strong appeal "provided the car does justice to its pedigree.
"I can assure you this car will epitomize both Monte Carlo style and Monte Carlo performance."
Perkins also announced that Chevrolet will start production in April of a 3/4-ton pickup truck designed to run on compressed natural gas.
"Commercial fleets with central refueling capabilities will love them."
He said the division's previously announced plan to build up to 4,000 Luminas capable of running on methanol or gasoline or a mixture of both -- coupled with its new CNG truck program -- makes Chevrolet the leader in delivering alternative fuel technology to the marketplace -- in both cars and trucks.
