CHEVROLET DEALERS SET ALL-TIME SALES RECORD FOR APRIL

WARREN, Mich., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Chevrolet dealers set an all- time truck sales record for the month of April with deliveries of 121,036 units, up 22.7 percent from a year ago, and besting the previous record set in 1989.
At the same time, retail passenger car sales were up nearly 26 percent from last year, and up 15 percent from last month. Nearly every Chevrolet passenger car and truck line was up at retail.
"There's no question that the truck market is extremely strong, but we're especially pleased at our performance in passenger cars -- at retail," said Jim Perkins, Chevrolet general manager.
"That performance validates the tough decisions we made last year to forgo a good chunk of fleet business in favor of concentrating on the more profitable retail sales," Perkins said.
"For example, the new Geo Prizm is up an astonishing 222 percent at retail, highlighting the fact that we no longer sell many Prizms to daily rental fleets," he added.
"In addition, the strong Chevrolet car and truck sales were led by the four products on which we introduced value pricing last fall -- with reductions on Geo Metro and Cavalier, and no price increases on Lumina and the S-Blazer."
Dealer orders for both cars and trucks have skyrocketed in recent weeks, and several car and truck lines are in a virtual "sellout" condition for the remainder of the model year as far as dealer orders are concerned.
"We've never underestimated the strength of our Chevrolet dealer organization," Perkins said. "They've come a long way back from some bad times, and I'm extremely proud of the job they're doing today."
