CHEVROLET CONTINUES ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT WITH PIKES PEAK TREE PLANTING

After the Excitement of the `Race To The Clouds' a Quiet
Moment Dedicated to Restoring the Beauty of the Mountain
PIKES PEAK, Colo., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Geo Environmental/Tree Program with partner, USDA Forest Service, will contribute to the rehabilitation of the Pikes Peak area by planting a small stand of Englemann Spruce near the Glen Cove. The July 5 ceremonial planting, at the base of the old ski area on Pikes Peak Road, is a precursor to the future planting of 6,000 trees.
"Chevrolet has enjoyed its reputation as a "high performance" company; certainly our sponsorship of the Pikes Peak hill climb and our winning the Indy 500 for the last six years, prove that," said Dan Semenik, Chevrolet's regional marketing manager. "But we also have an environmental side and the projects sponsored by the Geo Environmental/Tree Program make everyone at Chevy just as proud."
The indigenous Englemann Spruce, which came from local cone seed stock, are expected to thrive in the area on Pikes Peak.
The date of the ceremonial tree-planting is also particularly appropriate, marking the 100th anniversary of the writing of "America the Beautiful." Katherine Lee Bates, who authored what unofficially became this country's "second national anthem," did so with the inspirational view from atop Pikes Peak.
The Geo Environmental/Tree Program, through its support of local non-profit tree-planting not only implements the planting of thousands of new trees (one for every Geo purchased in markets where the program is active) but also educates and informs the public about the care, maintenance and benefits of trees that many people take for granted. Among those benefits are the reduction of air pollution, energy-saving shade, noise abatement and even help in combating ozone depletion. More than 180,000 trees have been planted by the program so far, with a goal of 200,000 by the end of the year. Some of those trees have been planted and cared for because of Chevrolet-Geo support of the Denver Urban Forest and Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado. Forest Service District Ranger James Montoya said, "This is an excellent program for the Forest Service and, most important, both the environment and the people win."
Chevrolet's Geo Environmental/Tree Program is an on-going commitment that very much signals the importance of this "good neighbor" effort. "In a tough economy, sometimes `give back' programs are the first to go," said Dan Pearlman, whose company developed and administers the Geo Environmental/Tree Program for Chevrolet.
"Chevrolet's continued participation is a real tribute to their commitment," Pearlman said, "and to the program's success in terms of favorable public reaction and sales generated by the Geo Environmental/Tree Program."
A toll-free telephone number (800-TREE-GEO) is an integral part of the Geo Environmental/Tree Program. It informs and encourages people to get involved on a local level by taking personal control to make their part of the environment just a little bit nicer through the simple act of planting a tree.
