CHESAPEAKE PAPER PRODUCTS COMPANY EARNS ISO-9001

WEST POINT, Va., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Chesapeake Paper Products Company announced that is has become one of the first integrated pulp and paper mills in the United States to earn ISO-9001 certification, and it is the first ISO-9001 certified producer of bleached market pulp and white top linerboard. The mill received certification from Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance Ltd. after over two years of intense employee-driven preparation. The three-year approval was issued Feb. 2, 1993.
"I am extremely proud of the efforts of our employees to earn this distinction," said Thomas Blackburn, president of Chesapeake Paper Products Company. "Their dedication to quality will lead our business into the next century," he added. Pete Chiericozzi, vice president of sales, explained that customers now have additional assurance that the products they buy have been manufactured under a documented quality process. "As a result, our customers can avoid or reduce costs by not requiring certificates of analysis or doing incoming raw material testing," he added.
The ISO effort had its origins in an employee quality improvement committee about three years ago. Chiericozzi explained that through this committee the company learned that the ISO standards could both help improve the overall quality and consistency of the process and help the company compete in the European Community. The company exports a significant amount of bleached hardwood market pulp and white top linerboard to European customers who increasingly require ISO-9000 certification of their suppliers.
ISO-9000 is a series of international quality systems and standards established by the International Standards Organization (ISO), headquartered in Geneva. The purpose of ISO-9000 guidelines is to promote uniform quality in business on a worldwide level. ISO- 9001 which was earned by Chesapeake Paper Products Company is the most comprehensive of the three ISO-9000 standards with 20 elements including design/development, production, installation and servicing. The system covers processes at the West Point mill from incoming raw materials through the finished products.
