 CHESAPEAKE CORPORATION JOINS INDUSTRY IN
 ANNOUNCING ENVIRONMENTAL, FORESTRY PRACTICES
RICHMOND, Va., May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Chesapeake Corporation (NYSE:CSK) joined with other major U.S. producers of pulp, paper and paperboard products to pledge their commitment to a new and comprehensive code of principles aimed at setting goals for environmental quality and forest stewardship in their operations.
The American Paper Institute, the industry's national trade association, stated in a news release today that adherence to these principles would be a mandatory condition of membership for its 170 participating companies.
"The principles apply to virtually every aspect of our operations," said J. Carter Fox, president and chief executive officer.
"Consumers today continue to demand high-quality products. At the same time, they want a healthy environment. These principles reflect our industry's commitment to work toward both goals in a public fashion," added Fox. "This is a voluntary effort by all API members to make these goals a priority consideration in operating existing facilities as well as in planning new operations."
API began discussing the concept of adopting forestry and environmental principles in 1990. Adoption of the environmental principles occurred in November 1991, and the forestry principles in March 1992.
Companies are currently incorporating the principles into their operations and are expected to certify their adoption by February 15, 1993. If a company fails to offer this certification or if a company is deemed by API to be operating in a manner that calls into question its compliance, its membership in API may be terminated.
"Adopting these principles is a signal of just how seriously our industry takes its environmental responsibilities," said Anthony P. Gammie, chairman of API and CEO of Bowater, Incorporated. "We believe that codifying our principles and creating a mechanism to require adherence by our members will enable the industry to maintain environmental quality and continue responsible management of natural resources for this and future generations P while serving consumer needs and remaining a world-class competitor in the global marketplace."
Chesapeake Corporation is an integrated paper and forest products company that produces and markets kraft, tissue, packaging and treated wood products.
